The elderly homeless nursing home had its beginnings at the end of the 19th century when the mother superior of the Congregation of the little sisters of the homeless elderly submits a request to the Spanish Government so that they give you some land for the construction of a hospital and nursing home. In 1893, and in the same location which has today in Puerta de Tierra, begins the construction of the first hostel. On the same ground, in 1911, begins the construction of the current building in three stages. In 1971 the lodge changed its name from “Asilo” to “Hogar Nuestra Señora de la Providencia” (Home of Our Lady of Providencia). In 1991, he completed the construction of the annex building which provided fitted to more elderly and nursing home. The new facilities were blessed by His Excellency Luis Cardenal Aponte Martinez on June 16 of that year and activity coincided with the celebration of the centenary of the arrival of the “Hermanitas de los Ancianos Desamparados” (sisters of the homeless elderly people) on the island.

El hogar de ancianos desamparados tuvo sus comienzos a finales del siglo XIX cuando la Madre Superiora de la congregación de las Hermanitas de los Ancianos Desamparados somete una petición al gobierno español para que le cedan unos terrenos para la construcción de un hospital y asilo de ancianos. En 1893 y en la misma localización que tiene hoy en Puerta de Tierra, comienza la edificación del primer albergue. En el mismo terreno, en 1911, se comienza la construcción del edificio actual en tres etapas. En 1971 el albergue cambió su nombre de Asilo por el de Hogar Nuestra Señora de la Providencia. En 1991 finalizó la construcción del edificio anexo al Hogar que proporcionó cabida a más ancianitos y ancianitas. Las nuevas instalaciones fueron bendecidas por su Excelencia Luis Cardenal Aponte Martínez el 16 de junio de ese año y la actividad coincidió con la celebración del centenario de la llegada de las Hermanitas de los Ancianos Desamparados a la Isla.
